Lowick Village
Willow Cottage is situated in Lowick.
Lowick means "settlement on the river Low".
A Roman Road called the "Devil's Causeway" passes through Lowick on it's journey from Corbridge in the south to Berwick upon Tweed in the North of the county.
An ancient road used by the Monks of Lindisfarne to go to Durham crosses this Roman Road, east to west, and it is on this crossroads that the village of Lowick began to develop.
Monks of Lindisfarne built the Norman Chapel in Lowick when the ancient parish was sub divided. The present Anglican Church of St. John the Baptist dates from 1794, with the addition of the chancel and vestry in 1887.
Lowick village is ideally situated, being equidistance between Edinburgh in Scotland and Newcastle in North East England. It is only 10 minutes drive away from the stunningly beautiful Northumbrian coastline – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and inland the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park. Nearby are such iconic places as Holy Island (Lindisfarne), Bamburgh, Berwick upon Tweed, the Farne Islands, Alnwick, the Cheviot Hills, National Park and the Ford & Etal Estates. The village has a corner shop with off license and homebaking, 2 pubs "The Black Bull" & "The White Swan" both with restaurants, and the Black Bull with coffee shop, a repairing garage, a mobile Fish N Chip van weekly. Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland
"One of the most exciting towns in England"
Where else, within just one hour, can you walk on dramatic Elizabethan fortifications, see the country's first purpose built infantry Barracks, view an iconic 28 arch railway viaduct designed by Robert Stephenson, a conglomeration of enchanting Georgian houses, cobbled lanes and archways, and a mix of character shops & restaurants - all within a stunning setting alongside one of Britain's finest salmon rivers, and with views up the Tweed valley & out across the estuary as far as Holy Island & beyond?
The definitive border town, focus of many centuries of warfare between England & Scotland, Berwick has perfectly preserved Elizabethan fortifications which are the most complete bastioned town defences in Northern Europe. The 18th century Berwick Barracks were the first in Britain to be purpose built. With bastions, batteries, buttresses & even a Russian cannon the dramatic history of Berwick comes alive as you walk these imposing walls.
A boat building town from the 18th century & a centre of a thriving salmon fishing industry from the 19th century, Berwick has stone harbour walls & a cobbled quayside beneath the massive ramparts. From these, during the summer months, you can step back in time & watch the netting of salmon still taking place from Gardo's Batt, a tradition unique to Berwick.
